Why choose the Ministry of Health?

‘It’s a place where you make really tangible differences to people’s lives.’

When you work at the Ministry of Health you’ll play an active role in improving, promoting and protecting the health of all New Zealanders.

We need people with the skills, energy and passion to make a difference.

Play your part in making a difference to the health of all New Zealanders.

‘It’s challenging and it’s a field I feel passionate about.’

Important and meaningful work

Through our leadership of the health and disability system, the Ministry helps ensure New Zealanders live longer, healthier and more independent lives, while delivering on the government’s priorities.

‘It’s very stimulating work – understanding the complexities and strategic issues involved.’

Health and disability is one of the most interesting and important areas of government work.

Health policy choices are complex and challenging, and we have to provide clear and practical advice to the government, supported by strong analysis of issues.

At the same time, the Ministry is a funder, purchaser and regulator of health and disability services.

Employment opportunities at the Ministry are hugely varied. Whether you are a policy analyst or IT specialist, a clinician or administrator, a project manager or a communications advisor, we need your skills and passion to make a difference.

Benefits

‘I strongly value the positive and supportive working environment I've found at the Ministry.’

The Ministry takes the health and wellbeing of its staff seriously.

We offer flexible work hours and a strong focus on career and professional development, including an in-house training programme and access to study assistance.

We also have an annual flu vaccination programme, an active team sports funding programme and an employee assistance programme that provides confidential support for both personal and work issues at no cost.

Holidays Act remediation

Manatū Hauora (the Ministry of Health) has been working to address non-compliance issues relating to the Holidays Act 2003 to ensure all current and former employees receive their correct leave entitlements and payments for leave.

If you worked for the Ministry during the period 1 January 2013 and 15 September 2021, you may be eligible for a Holidays Act remediation payment.

See Holidays Act remediation for more information.
