Acute Hospital Bed Days data

This data is provided to districts (previously DHBs) and their health system partners to support system level measures.

From December 2022 (Q4) onwards data reports are also available on the ShinyApp.

Note: With each new report, the measures for all the periods of data that are presented are recalculated, not just the latest period. In other words the latest period results are not appended to previous results. As a result differences may exist for earlier time periods if compared to previous reports. These differences could be due to late returns and/or coding changes. Users will be explicitly informed of any change in the methodology for each of the measures.

Please note that from 2021/22 onwards, we have switched from using NZ Deprivation 2013 to NZ Deprivation 2018 when providing breakdown by deprivation quintile for applicable numerators and denominators. In some cases, this can result in significant differences when comparing against historical performance so caution should be exercised when looking at data breakdown by deprivation quintile.

There have been some changes in data recording for short-stay ED cases in Christchurch since Dec 2020 when they moved to the new hospital. This has reduced the number of inpatient records for services where the patients come into hospital via the ED. Instead of being reported to NMDS these events are now included in NNPAC data only.

The districts (previously DHBs) of Domicile, districts of Service and PHO Lead districts reports for the December 2021, March 2022 and June 2022 periods below were updated in Dec 2022 due to an issue affecting the Top 50 DRGs in these reports.
