Your responsibilities under the Radiation Safety Act 2016
If you manage radiation sources, you are required to do the following under the Radiation Safety Act 2016.
Licencing and registration
- Hold a source licence, which authorises the licence holder to possess a radiation source for a purpose.
- Register controlled radiation sources in the radiation source register and update the Office of Radiation Safety on changes to your location, possession and status.
Safe storage and security
- Store radiation sources safely and securely. Refer to the appropriate codes of practice.
Transport
- Transport radioactive material safely and securely. Refer to the appropriate codes of practice and to the Road transport of radioactive material guidance.
- Transport irradiating apparatus safely and securely.
Disposal
Codes and incident management
- Notify radiation incidents promptly according to approved processes.
- Follow the codes of practice relating to the relevant radiation source or activities.
Depending on your role and the activities you perform, you may also be required to do the following.
- Hold a use licence to use the radiation sources.
- Obtain a consent to import or export radioactive materials.
