The interview shortlisting process
- The selection panel reviews all applications and will form a shortlist.
- If you’re shortlisted, we’ll call you to make an interview time. We’ll also let you know if you need to prepare a presentation.
- If you’re an unsuccessful candidate, we’ll email to let you know. We’re not able to give unsuccessful candidates any specific feedback at this stage.
Interview preparation
Prepare for your interview with tips from the Careers NZ website
The interview is your opportunity to tell us how your experience and achievements fit with the required competencies of the role. We'll evaluate you against each key competency, based on the experience, transferable skills and achievements you outline.
The interview also provides opportunity for you to find out more about the role and the Ministry, so we welcome any questions you may have for the panel.
What happens after the interview
If you are a successful candidate, we’ll call and congratulate you. At this point we’ll ask you to provide referees for our reference checks.
If you are unsuccessful at getting the role, you’ll receive verbal feedback from the people leader who interviewed you.
Reference checks and security checks
We will:
- organise Ministry of Justice/Police checks
- obtain reference checks (we will contact you before we contact your referees).
Depending on the role, we may have to complete a security clearance or other checks which are specifically required for the role. We'll tell you about any required checks as soon as we can.
Offer of employment
If you’re our successful applicant, we’ll make you an offer of employment. All appointments are made subject to the Public Service Act.
Visas and international applicants
We will consider any international applicants who hold a valid visa entitling them to work in New Zealand. This is provided that the duration of the work is covered by the duration of the visa.
If we're seeking to recruit internationally, we will advise this in the advertisement.
