About codes of practice
Codes of practice are secondary legislation issued under sections 86 to 90 of the Radiation Safety Act 2016 (the Act). These codes outline the technical requirements that organisations and individuals must follow to meet the fundamental requirements of the Act, outlined in sections 9 to 12.
These requirements help manage the varying safety and security risks associated with radiation sources and practices.
The Act enables the government to make regulations and allows the Director for Radiation Safety to issue codes of practice that reflect the level of radiation risk.
Under section 8, anyone – whether an individual or an organisation – dealing with a radiation source must comply with the relevant provisions in the applicable codes of practice, regardless of whether they require authorisation under section 13.
Some codes are supported by compliance guides, which offer practical advice on how to meet specific regulatory requirements.
