Regulation of assisted dying services

The Ministry of Health is responsible for regulating assisted dying services in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This includes making sure assisted dying services:

  • are person-centred
  • are equitable and accessible
  • meet the requirements of the the End of Life Choice Act 2019
  • have appropriate safeguards in place for the people and practitioners involved.

Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora is responsible for operating and collecting data about the Assisted Dying Service.

Registrar (assisted dying): annual reports

The Registrar (assisted dying) reports to the Minister of Health on the operation of the Assisted Dying Service each year.

Review of the End of Life Choice Act

The Ministry of Health must carry out a legislative review of the End of Life Choice Act 2019 within 3 years of it coming into force.

The review will consider any amendments to the Act and make recommendations to the Minister of Health. The Minister will then present a final report to the House of Representatives to consider.
