Licensing radiation users

Users of radiation sources must either hold a licence under the Radiation Safety Act 2016; be authorised in regulations; be authorised in a source licence; or act under the supervision or instructions of someone who is authorised. Here you can read information about licensing.

The Office of Radiation Safety issues licences for users of ionising radiation.

  • Each licence has a scope, setting out the extent of radiation use permitted by the licence
  • Each licence may also have conditions that the holder must comply with.

How to apply

First contact the Office of Radiation Safety to obtain an application form. Let them know what purpose the licence will be used for: email orsenquiries@health.govt.nz

When you’ve filled in the necessary paperwork and demonstrated that you satisfy all the requirements, send in your application, along with the licence application fee.

Application fees

Once the application is received acknowledged, an invoice will be provided to applicants. Fees can be paid via internet banking, credit cards or cheques.

Fee structure

Regulation 17 provides that the fee for use licences is $95 for each authorisation year. 

This fee is GST exclusive (regulation 20) meaning that the GST inclusive amount is $109.25. Licences can be issued for one, two or three years meaning that the GST inclusive fee is $109.25, $218.50 or $327.75 depending on which option is selected.
