“We are encouraging all Pacific students studying medicine, dentistry, nursing, midwifery, or an allied health profession to apply now.” says Gerardine Clifford-Lidstone, Director Pacific Health.

“Pacific people play a critical role in our health workforce. During our COVID response and vaccine rollout, we saw just how vital our Pacific workforce and health providers were in connecting and engaging with our Pacific communities. They are invaluable.”

Recently commissioned research by the Ministry reiterates that Pacific peoples prefer to be engaged with sources they trust and are recognisably Pacific. This shows how significant the contribution of Pacific people continues to be for the health workforce, now and in the future.

The Pacific Health scholarships lay the foundation to increasing Pacific representation within the health workforce which in turn is crucial to improving health outcomes for our Pacific communities.

The Ministry has allocated $1.4 million for next year’s scholarships to support Pacific students who are taking health and disability-related courses.

Since 2002, when the Pacific Health Scholarships programme started, the Ministry has awarded close to 2,000 scholarships to Pacific students.

Applications for the 2022 Pacific Health Scholarships close on 7 February 2022 at 11.59 pm. Medical and dentistry students are eligible for up to $10,000, and nursing, midwifery, and allied health students can qualify for up to $5,000 towards their tuition fees.
