The Radiation Incident Responders' Handbook features the Radiation Incident Response Plan (RIRP) – which provides expert assistance to the emergency services following a radiological incident.

It outlines a coordinated and safe approach to managing radiological emergencies, particularly when existing plans are unavailable or insufficient.

The handbook details procedures for Level 1 and Level 2 responders, including how to:

  • establish safety perimeters
  • manage exposure risks
  • conduct decontamination
  • handle contaminated equipment.

It also includes protocols for media engagement and outlines responsibilities for clean-up and recovery operations.

Practical tools such as checklists, radionuclide risk tables, and contact lists are provided to support responders in the field.

The handbook reinforces the importance of early expert advice, clear communication, and adherence to national and international safety standards.
