Publicly funded hospital discharges

Number of hospital discharges, total population

  • In 2009/10 there were 1,035,954 publicly funded hospital discharges, an increase of 3.6 percent from 2008/09
  • Inpatient hospitalisations (660,678) were 63.8 percent of total discharges with the remaining 375,276 discharged as daycases.
  • Females accounted for 55.9 percent of 2009/10 hospital inpatient discharges

Number of hospital discharges, Māori population

  • Discharges for Māori (174,427) accounted for 16.8 percent of total discharges in 2009/10
  • Māori inpatient hospitalisations (109,430) were 62.7 percent of total Māori discharges
  • Māori female hospitalisations were 57.5 percent of total discharges for Māori in 2009/10

Publicly funded hospital discharges by age

  • Of total publicly funded discharges, children aged from 0–4 years were the largest group (143,281 or 13.8 percent of total discharges) followed by 75–79 year olds (62,749 or 6.1 percent of total discharges)
  • Of publicly funded discharges for Māori, children aged between 0–4 years were the largest group (35,843 or 20.5 percent of total Māori discharges) followed by the 20–24 year age group at 16,023 or 9.2 percent of total Māori discharges)

Age-standardised rates for publicly funded hospital discharges

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 21,794.8 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 28,072.1 per 100,000 Māori population

Hospital cases involving injury and poisoning

Total population

  • For the total population there were 180,042 publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning in 2009/10, an increase of 4.7 percent from 2008/09
  • Males accounted for 53.0 percent of these cases

Māori population

  • There were 27,199 discharges for Māori in 2009/10 involving injury and poisoning
  • Males accounted for 57.4 percent of injury cases for Māori

Age-standardised rates for publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 3595.1 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 4483.1 per 100,000 Māori population

Total numbers of publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals

  • In 2009/10 there were 1,373,272 publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals, an increase of 7.8 percent from 2008/09
  • Females accounted for 55.6 percent of 2009/10 procedures
  • 33.9 percent (465,028) of all procedures were undertaken as daycases
