Publicly funded hospital discharges

Number of hospital discharges, total population

  • In 2005/06 there were 893,237 publicly funded hospital discharges.
  • Inpatient hospitalisations (592,473) were 66.3 percent of total discharges with the remaining 300,764 discharged as daycases.
  • Females accounted for 56.7 percent of 2005/06 hospital inpatient discharges.

Number of hospital discharges, Maori population

  • Discharges for Maori (150,085) accounted for 16.8 percent of total discharges in 2005/06.
  • Maori inpatient hospitalisations (93,314) were 62.2 percent of total discharges.
  • Maori female hospitalisations were 57.5 percent of total discharges for Maori in 2005/06.

Publicly funded hospital discharges by age

  • Of total publicly funded discharges, children aged from 0–4 years were the largest group (126,852 or 14.2 percent of total discharges) followed by 30–34 year olds (59,966 or 6.7 percent of total discharges).
  • Of publicly funded discharges for Maori, children aged between 0–4 years were the largest group (30,730 or 20.5 percent of total Maori discharges) followed by the 20–24 year age group at 12,594 or 8.4 percent of total Maori discharges).

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 20,440 per 100,000 population.
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Maori was 26,530 per 100,000 Maori population.

Hospital cases involving injury and poisoning

Total population

  • For the total population there were 152,157 publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning in 2005/06.
  • Males accounted for 53.7 percent of these cases.

Maori population

  • There were 22,040 discharges for Maori in 2005/06 which involved injury and poisoning.
  • Males accounted for 59.4 percent of injury cases for Maori.

Age-standardised rates for publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 3,288 per 100,000 population.
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Maori was 3,855 per 100,000 Maori population.

Total numbers of publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals

In 2005/06 there were 1,179,437 publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals.

  • Females accounted for 55.3 percent of 2005/06 procedures.
  • 33.3 percent (393,070) of all procedures were undertaken as a daycase.
