About the SCENZ Group lists

The Support and Consultation for End of Life in New Zealand (SCENZ) Group maintains lists of health professionals who are willing to deliver assisted dying services.

Qualified health professionals can register for these lists:

  • medical practitioners willing to provide assisted dying services to patients outside their practice (replacement medical practitioners)
  • medical practitioners willing to undertake the second independent assessment (independent medical practitioners)
  • psychiatrists.

Medical practitioners who provide assisted dying services to patients already under their care do not need to register with the SCENZ Group.

About the SCENZ Group

Health practitioners not on the SCENZ Group lists

Medical practitioners with patients in their care who would like them to perform the role of attending medical practitioner do not need to register with the SCENZ Group.

If you are a medical practitioner and would like to provide services to your own patients, please email [email protected] for more information or to express your interest.

If you are a nurse practitioner and would like to be involved in service delivery, please email [email protected].

How the replacement medical practitioner list is used

Some medical practitioners do not provide assisted dying services for conscientious or other reasons. If they are asked by a person in their care about assisted dying, they are legally required to tell the person:

  • of their conscientious objection; and
  • of the person’s right to ask the SCENZ Group for the name and contact details of a replacement medical practitioner.

A person may also contact the SCENZ Group if they do not feel comfortable discussing assisted dying with their doctor.

Information for the public

For help finding a practitioner willing to provide assisted dying services, contact the Assisted Dying Service at Health New Zealand. They will work with the SCENZ Group to connect you with a practitioner.
