In October 2023, the Ministry of Health | Manatū Hauora launched its Research and Evaluation Fund. This internal fund enables a strategic approach to generating evidence that aligns with the priorities of the health system and is underpinned by the best practice research and evaluation.

It also contributes to a learning health system through its processes, and ultimately, the evidence products it will generate. This supports evidence-based policy and decision-making which will contribute to improved health outcomes for all New Zealanders.

The Ministry’s Strategy and Policy | Te Pou Rautaki group hosts the Fund.

Evaluation of the Fund

Ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the Fund is crucial to its improvement, and to our understanding of how the Fund is, or not, meeting its priorities. In the early stages we have looked at Fund processes, including what worked well, what didn’t work well, and improvement suggestions. The Fund has also been subject to an external assurance review. Evaluation activities continue, with an increasing focus on outcomes and impact over time.
