Repeal of the Therapeutic Products Act

On 17 December 2024, the Therapeutic Products Act Repeal Bill was signed into law by the Governor-General. Consequently, the Therapeutic Products Act 2023 was repealed on 18 December 2024.

The Therapeutic Products Act Repeal Act also amends the Dietary Supplements Regulations 1985. Further information can be found at Modernising dietary supplement regulations.

The current Medicines Act, 1981 is out of date and has not kept pace with significant technological changes in medicines, advanced therapies and medical devices.

Following decisions by Government in September 2024, the Ministry is developing a new Medical Products Bill to replace the Medicines Act 1981.  The Government also agreed in September 2024 that natural health products would be regulated under a standalone bill, to be developed following engagement with the natural health products sector.

In developing the new Medical Products Bill, and future natural health products legislation, the Government will be listening to consumers, industry and practitioners on how future regulation can support them.
