Taking Action on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: 2016–2019: An action plan (the FASD Action Plan) was published in 2016. It was developed following a consultation process involving a discussion document and a request for submissions.

The overall goals of the FASD Action Plan are that FASD is prevented and that people with FASD and their family/whānau live the best possible lives. In order to achieve these goals, the FASD Action Plan sets out four priorities of: prevention; early identification; support; and evidence.

The FASD Action Plan aims to create a more effective, equitable and collaborative approach to FASD. It is a cross-agency government commitment to preventing FASD and improving the lives of people with FASD and their families.

Although the FASD Action Plan is formally from 2016 to 2019, it continues to be the foundation for an evidence-based, interagency approach for preventing and responding to FASD. Many actions outlined in the action plan have now been completed. Interagency work also continues on many other actions.
