A decade has passed since New Zealand adopted the smokefree 2025 goal. Over this time, smoking rates have continued to decline; however, but there are still significant inequities for Māori, Pacific peoples, and those living in socioeconomically deprived areas. Much work still needs to be done, particularly to reduce smoking rates among Māori, Pacific peoples and those living in our most disadvantaged communities.
We ran a six-week public consultation on 'Proposals for a Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan' from 15 April to 31 May 2021. We received over 5100 submissions, made either through our online consultation, face-to-face hui or talanoa sessions across the motu.
We heard from a diverse range of groups such as whānau, Pacific and Māori community groups, academics, tobacco retailers and industry groups. The feedback we received is important to help us shape our final Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan, which will be published shortly.
