This report presents the activities and recommendations of the National Maternity Monitoring Group (NMMG) in 2017/18.

The Director-General of Health established the NMMG in 2012 to oversee New Zealand's maternity system, and specifically, the implementation of the New Zealand Maternity Standards.

The NMMG:

  • acts as a strategic advisor to the Ministry of Health on areas for improvement in the maternity sector
  • provides a national overview of the quality and safety of New Zealand's maternity services.
