The Guidelines for the Control of Multidrug-resistant Organisms (MDROs) in New Zealand provide general advice on MDRO control

The Guidelines include:

• antibiotic stewardship
• modes of transmission and risk factors
• management of patients with MDROs in health care facilities
• screening
• management of staff
• transfer of patients between institutions
• additional measures in the event of an outbreak
• management in the community
• surveillance, microbiological methods and treatment.

There are separate MRSA guidelines, (Guidelines for the Control of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in New Zealand), and these should be read in conjunction with the MDRO guidelines.

Health care facilities should also have their own guidelines and policy for the management of MDRO based on best practice and current advice.
