Publication date:

The Ministry of Health has published comparative data on New Zealanders’ self-reported experiences of racial discrimination over time.

This material is drawn from module data within the New Zealand Health Survey, which provides information about the health and wellbeing of adults and children in New Zealand.

From time to time, the survey includes questions about New Zealanders’ experiences of racial discrimination, which is associated with poorer health outcomes.

The racial discrimination module data was collected from the 2011/12, 2016/17, 2020/21 and 2023/24 New Zealand Health Surveys.

Note: Questions about racial discrimination were not included in the 2024/25 survey, which was published on 19 November 2025.

You can access the report at Racial Discrimination 2023/24: New Zealand Health Survey.
