From 1 February 2026, specialist general practitioners and nurse practitioners working within their area of practice will be able to diagnose and prescribe for adults with ADHD. Nurse practitioners in paediatric or mental health services will also be able to do this for children and adolescents.
These updates are designed to meet the needs of people living with ADHD across New Zealand by improving access and timeliness of care.
Prescribing will continue to follow existing regulatory and clinical guidelines to ensure quality care and prevent misuse. Pharmac is actively managing supply and exploring alternative brands and treatments to support increased demand.
Implementation will take time and is voluntary. Not all general practitioners and nurse practitioners will provide these services. It is expected that those with a specific interest in ADHD will take on this role. New ADHD services will develop gradually as clinicians build competence in ADHD care. This approach ensures safe, high-quality treatment for people living with ADHD.
