Streamlining the medicines approval process

These documents have been proactively released by the Ministry of Health on behalf of the Associate Minister of Health, Hon David Seymour.

The Cabinet paper seeks Cabinet’s agreement to establish a verification approval process for medicines, as part of a broader set of operational improvements and efficiencies to streamline the approval processes for medicines. It gives effect to the Government’s commitment to take decisions to streamline the Medsafe approval process, as included in the Coalition Government’s Action Plan for New Zealand 1 April – 30 June 2024.

The paper also begins work to fulfil the Act New Zealand - National Party and New Zealand First - National Party Coalition Agreements’ commitments to require Medsafe to approve new pharmaceuticals within 30 days of them being approved by at least two overseas medicines regulatory agencies recognised by New Zealand.
