Manatū Hauora – Ministry of Health has published the 2022 Health and Independence Report - Te Pūrongo mō te Hauora me te Tū Motuhake 2022. The report, which is produced annually, provides an overview of the state of public health and wellbeing for people living in New Zealand in the 2022 calendar year. It collates information from a wide range of sources and subject matter experts and provides a consolidated view of the health system.

There are four main sections in the report: People of Aotearoa, Health Measures, Determinants of Health and Wellbeing, and COVID-19. Throughout the report detailed information on health outcomes is provided, including breakdowns where available by ethnicity, age, gender, disability and socioeconomic deprivation.

The 2022 Health and Independence Report shows that health equity continues to be a challenge. Māori, Pacific peoples, disabled and socioeconomically disadvantaged people generally experience worse health outcomes and were disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The 2022 Health and Independence Report has been produced earlier this year to align it with our Pae Ora Health Strategies. It provides an evidence base to support the development and future direction of these important strategies which will set the medium and long-term direction for the health system,” says Peter Dolan, Group Manager of Evidence, Research and Analytics.

“By providing this information, the Health and Independence Report supports evidence-based decision-making and serves as a resource for policymakers, health professionals and anyone with an interest in promoting good health and wellbeing for all New Zealanders.”
