Physical activity resources

There are lots of organisations and resources out there to help you get more physically active. Here’s some to start.

Organisations

Sport New Zealand

Sport New Zealand has lots of physical activity tips and information – check out its advice for parents.

You can look up your local Regional Sports Trust for more information on sports clubs, activities, walks and events in your area – or call 0800 ACTIVE (0800 22 84 83).

Regional Sports Trusts

Regional Sports Trusts work across the physical activity, sport and recreation sector and have a wide range of duties including the organisation and distribution of funding and donations to regional sports organisations, schools, clubs, individuals and community groups and acting as a regional voice for the communities that they operate within.

The 17 Regional Sports Trusts are:

NZ Transport Agency

The NZ Transport Agency organises the Go By Bike Day, Be Bright campaign, Big Bike Tune Up events and has a great list of resources such as the bike buyer’s guide, and cycle routes and maps.

Department of Conservation

The DOC website lists many walking opportunities on both conservation and other land throughout New Zealand, as well as suggestions for other outdoor activities.

Parks and council-run sports facilities

Local councils can provide lists of parks and recreation areas, bush walks, and council run sports facilities. See the Local Councils website.

The YMCA provides sport and recreation facilities in communities throughout New Zealand.
