About the B4 School Check

The B4 School Check is a free health and development check for four year olds.

  • It’s the final Well Child/Tamariki Ora health and development check.
  • Most of it is done by a B4 School Check nurse. Vision and hearing technicians will test your child’s eyesight and hearing.

Children going for a B4 School Check get a free WotWots activity or board book, and a sticker.

The strengths and difficulties questionnaire

At the B4 School Check, you and your child’s early childhood education teacher will each fill out a strengths and difficulties questionnaire. (Your child’s new-entrant teacher can fill it out if your child isn’t in early childhood education.)

  • The B4 School Check nurse will use the questionnaire to help them assess your child’s social and emotional development.
  • It helps them get an overall picture of your child’s strengths and difficulties, so your child’s needs are identified. It isn’t used to diagnose or label children.

There are two versions of the questionnaire:

  • One for parents, to see how your child interacts at home
  • One for early childhood educators or teachers, to see how your child interacts in their wider social environment.

The nurse will look at the completed questionnaires and discuss them with you. If there are any concerns that could affect your child's ability to learn well at school (eg, a communication difficulty), they’ll talk to you about what you can do.
