Well Child/Tamariki Ora
Well Child/Tamariki Ora is a free service that is offered to all New Zealand children from birth to five years. Well Child can support you to protect and improve your child’s health, so they can grow and develop to their full potential.
How does Well Child/Tamariki Ora work?
The programme offers screening, education and support.
After you join up:
- Your child can receive free wellness checks.

You’ll get a free Well Child/Tamariki Ora Health Book.
- The book has information on protecting and improving your child’s health and development.
- The book reminds you about the things you can do with your baby or child to keep them healthy and safe.
Your child can have the B4 School Check, which ensures they’re well prepared for starting school. The B4 School Check includes a free eyesight and hearing test.

- It’s easy to join Well Child/Tamariki Ora – all you need to do is choose your Well Child provider. Your lead maternity carer can help you do this. Read more
- When your child is born, you’ll be given a copy of the Well Child/Tamariki Ora Health Book. It provides helpful information about different stages in your child’s development. Bring it along to every appointment with your doctor or nurse. Read more
- The B4 School Check is a free health and development check for four year olds. Read more
