Patient information / what to expect
Women can self-refer to the service or be referred by their GP or Family Planning.
Before you can made an appointment for an abortion you will need a pregnancy dating scan, antenatal blood tests and vaginal swabs. These can be organised by WHC TOP and are usually free (the scan may have a small surcharge).
If you self-refer you'll get a phone call from a health practitioner to discuss the procedure, contraception and answer any questions. In most cases you can choose whether to have a medical or surgical abortion, providing there is an appointment available. For some patients we may recommend a specific procedure due to medical conditions.
For abortion after 13 weeks, care is discussed on an individual basis.
Counselling is available at any time for anyone accessing our termination service. This can be arranged through our 0800 number.
Contraception is encouraged and discussed as part of the termination process.
Abortion services are free for New Zealand citizens and those on a working permit of two years or more. If you aren'ot eligible for free care your GP or Family Planning can advise you about other options.
