Patient information / what to expect

If you are considering an abortion, it is important that you consider all your options. It is also important that you have the support to make the decision that is right for you. You should talk to a health professional such as a GP, midwife, Family Planning or Christchurch Hospital about your options as soon as possible to find out about abortion services that meet your needs. They can provide non-judgemental and unbiased counselling about your options.

While you no longer need a GP referral to have an abortion, for women who have a GP we still recommend making an appointment (there is no cost associated with this visit) with them to discuss your options, confirm how many weeks pregnant you are and to make a referral if you decide to proceed. Your GP will then also arrange the swabs / bloods and ultrasound that are required before an abortion and this can help speed up the process.

There is public funding for appointments during early pregnancy, so your appointment to get a referral should be free if you are a New Zealand citizen or resident. As always, your medical appointment will be confidential.

Alternatively, you can contact the Gynaecology Procedure Unit at Christchurch Hospital on (03) 378-6386 and staff will make the arrangements for you.

If you are unsure what to do, you can discuss this with your GP or make a counselling appointment at Christchurch Hospital.

This service provides free abortion services and related counselling services to any pregnant person eligible for publicly funded health care.

There is no charge for abortion services for most New Zealand citizens or residents.

If you are not a New Zealand citizen or resident, you will need to check if you are eligible for publicly funded healthcare. You can look on  http://www.health.govt.nz/new-zealand-health-system/eligibility-publicly... or call the Christchurch Hospital patient eligibility team for further information (03) 364 0092 or (03) 364 0957.
