Andrea Reweti-Davis was referred with asthma, COPD, weight issues and high blood pressure in October 2016.
Andrea set herself a goal to complete a 500 metre ocean swim in January of 2017.
To support this, Andrea received monthly contact from Sport Wellington to provide support, encouragement and to discuss progress/barriers.
The contact also focused on initially setting small, achievable exercise goals and the importance of consistency to build up to level required for an ocean swim. Through Sport Wellington, Andrea was given discounted access to the local council-run swimming pool to encourage regular swimming training.
Andrea commented “It will be the first time I have attempted anything like it and I’m working hard to get some training in before the big event. I’m really excited about it.”
Andrea completed the Ocean swim challenge and “having the subsidised swim pass enabled me to get more training in”. After completing the swim, Andrea was encouraged to think about other activity options that she might enjoy continuing exercising regularly. The confidence boost of setting a challenging goal and achieving it builds motivation and reinforces the positive outcomes regular activity can have on ones well-being.
