What radiation sources include

Controlled radiation sources are (section 30(2)):

  • any irradiating apparatus
  • any sealed radioactive material
  • any nuclear material (whether sealed or unsealed)
  • any unsealed radioactive material if specified in the Regulations.

Who is required to register a source?

Section 31 of the Radiation Safety Act 2016 (the Act) requires a person who has management or control of a controlled radiation source to register sources before dealing with the source and also notify any change in the location, possession, disposal or removal of sources.

From 28 June 2023, a person who has management or control of an irradiating apparatus used for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) or X-ray diffraction (XRD) that is exempt from licensing by regulation 13 of the Radiation Safety Regulations 2016 must register the apparatus in accordance with section 31 of the Act. These registration requirements also mean that a ‘change notification’ form must be completed when there is a change in the location, possession, disposal or removal from New Zealand of XRFs or XRDs.
