Legal obligations on purchase of radiation sources

A person who has management or control of a source must register the source with the Office of Radiation Safety before dealing with that source. The purchaser must then notify the Office of any change in the location or possession of the source. See the registration requirements and how to register sources.

Legal obligations on sale or disposal of radiation sources

There are no registration obligations on the vendor if a radiation source is sold to another person in New Zealand (although the purchaser does have a registration obligation as above).

The vendor may, however, notify the Office of Radiation Safety if sources are disposed of a source. See the notify change of a registered source information.

If the vendor removes a source from New Zealand’s jurisdiction, an export permit is required. See how to obtain a permit.
