The purpose of maps is to reveal the socioeconomic landscape generated by the New Zealand Index of Deprivation 2006 (NZDep2006).

The background section includes information on the theory of deprivation, details concerning NZDep2006, the methods used to create this atlas, a brief discussion of the problem of confusing NZDep with the underlying reality, a discussion of ethical issues related to mapping NZDep, information about how to carry out longitudinal analyses that compare NZDep scores across different censuses, and information to assist in the interpretation of the maps.
