This statistical information contains national data in tabular form, detailing the numbers of publicly funded patients discharged, diagnoses and numbers of procedures carried out in both public and private hospitals.

The statistical information highlights the following facts:

Publicly funded hospital discharges

Number of hospital discharges, total population

  • In 2010/11 there were 1,052,870 publicly funded hospital discharges, an increase of 1.6 percent from 2009/10
  • Inpatient hospitalisations (672,171) were 63.8 percent of total discharges with the remaining 380,699 discharged as daycases.
  • Females accounted for 55.9 percent of 2010/11 hospital inpatient discharges

Number of hospital discharges, Māori population

  • Discharges for Māori (176,052) accounted for 16.7 percent of total discharges in 2010/11
  • Māori inpatient hospitalisations (110,700) were 62.9 percent of total Māori discharges
  • Māori female hospitalisations were 57.5 percent of total discharges for Māori in 2010/11

Publicly funded hospital discharges by age

  • Of total publicly funded discharges, children aged from 0–4 years were the largest group (145,286 or 13.8 percent of total discharges) followed by 85+ year olds (65,861 or 6.3 percent of total discharges)
  • Of publicly funded discharges for Māori, children aged between 0–4 years were the largest group (36,213 or 20.6 percent of total Māori discharges) followed by the 20–24 year age group at 16,423 or 9.3 percent of total Māori discharges)

Age-standardised rates for publicly funded hospital discharges

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 21831.1 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 27811.9 per 100,000 Māori population

Hospital cases involving injury and poisoning

Total population

  • For the total population there were 187,756 publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning in 2010/11, an increase of 4.3 percent from 2009/10
  • Males accounted for 52.5 percent of these cases

Māori population

  • There were 28,357 discharges for Māori in 2010/11 involving injury and poisoning
  • Males accounted for 56.6 percent of injury cases for Māori

Age-standardised rates for publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 3672.4 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 4602.6 per 100,000 Māori population

Total numbers of publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals

  • In 2010/11 there were 1,464,238 publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals, an increase of 6.6 percent from 2009/10
  • Females accounted for 55.4 percent of 2010/11 procedures
  • 32.9 percent (481,645) of all procedures were undertaken as daycases
