Number of hospital discharges, total population:

• In 2006/07 there were 925,793 publicly funded hospital discharges.
• Inpatient hospitalisations (607,082) were 65.6 percent of total discharges with the remaining 318,711 discharged as daycases.
• Females accounted for 55.6 percent of 2006/07 hospital inpatient discharges.

Number of hospital discharges, Maori population

• Discharges for Maori (154,931) accounted for 16.7 percent of total discharges in 2006/07.
• Maori inpatient hospitalisations (96,687) were 62.4 percent of total Maori discharges.
• Maori female hospitalisations were 56.7 percent of total discharges for Maori in 2006/07.

Publicly funded hospital discharges by age

• Of total publicly funded discharges, children aged from 0–4 years were the largest group (129,723 or 14 percent of total discharges) followed by 30–34 year olds (59,353 or 6.4 percent of total discharges).
• Of publicly funded discharges for Maori, children aged between 0–4 years were the largest group (31,559 or 20.4 percent of total Maori discharges) followed by the 20–24 year age group at 12,848 or 8.3 percent of total Maori discharges).

Total numbers of publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals
