- We recommend that you do not compare the information presented for 2015/16 with previous publications in this series as data completeness varies each year.
Summary
These tables contain summarised data showing privately funded hospital discharges and procedures by DHB, sex, age group and disease/procedure classification. The same data is available in three different formats:
Static tables: Formatted tables so you can view national data easily and read the key findings.
Pivot tables: Flexible tables that you can filter, manipulate and transform to do further analyses. DHB breakdowns are available in this format.
Data tables: Zip file package containing text files of the underlying data used in the pivot and static tables and a data dictionary.
The ‘Help’ sheet in the pivot tables file includes help on:
- how to choose the right file to use
- the differences between discharges and procedures
- how to find the right clinical or procedure codes
- how to get the number of hospital discharges associated with a condition
- how to get the number of people on which a particular procedure was performed.
Key findings
Privately funded hospital discharges in 2015/16
- Over 90,000 privately-funded hospital discharges were reported in 2015/16; an age-standardised rate of 16.2 hospitalisations per 1000 people.
- Over half of hospital discharges were for females (55%).
- The age-standardised rate among females was 20% higher than among males (17.6 per 1000 females compared with 14.7 per 1000 males).
- Discharges among those aged 65 years and over accounted for 35% of all male discharges and 29% of all female discharges.
- Age-specific rates among females of child-bearing age (15–44 years) were 1.6–1.8 times that of their male counterparts.
Privately funded hospital procedures in 2015/16
- Over 189,000 privately funded hospital procedures were reported in 2015/16; an age-standardised rate of 34.1 procedures per 1000 people.
- Over half of hospital procedures were for females (56%).
- The age-standardised rate among females was 30% higher than among males (38.4 per 1000 females compared with 29.7 per 1000 males).
- Procedures performed on those aged 65 years and over accounted for 32% of all procedures performed on males and 24% of all procedures performed on females.
- Age-specific rates of procedures performed on females of child-bearing age (15–44 years) were 1.7–2.0 times that performed on their male counterparts.
