Regulating sterilisation services: a focus on equity

The Director-General of Health has an obligation to review and report on whether there is timely and equitable access to sterilisation services.

Manatū Hauora regulates and monitors equitable access to sterilisation services through sterilisation services reporting. Te Whatu Ora is accountable for sterilisation services provision and equitable service access.

Sterilisation service providers are expected to collect quality ethnicity data using the HISO 2017 Ethnicity Data protocols. Providing high-quality ethnicity data will assist in ensuring government is able to track sterilisation trends by ethnicity and effectively monitor its performance to improve health outcomes and achieve health equity.

With increased data quality and reporting compliance, the overall goal of the sterilisation work programme is to ensure accessible, equitable and timely access to sterilisation services across Aotearoa New Zealand.
