  • Governance Group for implementation established.
  • Implementation programme begins.
  • Assessment of workforce interest – survey issued to health practitioner workforce.
Apr to Jun 2021
  • Nominations process for statutory bodies, including SCENZ (Support and Consultation for End of Life in NZ) and End Life Review Committee.
  • Service design and planning underway.
  • Launch of learning module (May) providing an overview of the Act and assisted dying.
  • Initial information sheets available for health professionals, health service providers, and the public.
  • Monthly webinar series for health professionals begins from June.
Jul to Sep 2021
  • Support and Consultation for End of Life in NZ group (SCENZ) established in August.
  • Funding mechanism and pricing schedule to be developed during July/August and a Section 88 Notice expected to be finalised in October.

  • The design of the assisted dying patient care pathway progressed with inputs from core partners and stakeholders in July.

  • A second workforce survey was undertaken July to check how the first health professional’s training module is being received, and how implementation preparedness is progressing.  

  • Implementation webinar series for health professionals continues, with recordings available on the LearnOnline health professional’s learning portal.

  • Information and resources will continue to be published as part of implementation progress.

  • Registrations of interest from practitioners for the SCENZ lists open in mid-August.

  • Further learning modules for health professionals will be released in September, including on conversations about assisted dying and the assisted dying care pathway.

  • A package of e-learning modules for health practitioners choosing to provide assisted dying services will be made available. There will also be practical training.

  • The IT systems and processes further developed and in place.

  • An online forum on assisted dying hosted 29–30 September for health professionals.

  • The End Life Review Committee established (around October).

  • Peer networking will be established for the workforce involved in providing assisted dying.

Oct to Nov 2021
  • Final training and guidance for health practitioners delivered.
  • Public information about the implementation and assisted dying service is available on the Ministry website.
  • The End of Life Choice Act comes into force on 7 November.
