Transporters of radioactive material

A new Code of Practice for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material was published in April 2019. This code applies to the safe transport of radioactive material by road, rail, sea and air.

This includes the design, manufacture, maintenance and repair of packaging and the preparation, consigning, loading, carriage including in-transit storage, shipment after storage, unloading and receipt at the final destination of loads of radioactive material and packages. Note, source licences are not required for the transport of radioactive material (section 15(a)) but those sources must be transported safely and securely (section 12).

Specific requirements relating to the safe and secure transport of radioactive material will be set out in codes of practice to be issued by the Director throughout 2017. As a minimum requirement all consignors, transporters and consignees must comply with the IAEA regulations for the safe transport of radioactive material.

Note, source licences are not required for the transport of radioactive material (section 15(a)) but those sources must be transported safely and securely (section 12).
