Below are some instructions and tips on how to prepare an application.
Important things to note before getting started
- Eligibility – ensure you are eligible to apply and have read the Guidelines for applicants.
- Confirmation of study and tuition fees form – must be attached in order for your application to go forward for assessment. This can be downloaded at Confirmation of study and tuition fees form (Word, 264 KB).
- Dates and times for opening and closing of applications are strictly observed.
- Important: Do not delete the original ‘Application saved or submitted’ acknowledgement email. This gives you the option of saving and coming back to your application as many times as necessary before it is submitted. Subsequent emails will only allow you to do this three times before they close down.
- Do not forget to submit your application by the closing date and time.
- Competitive – the application process is very competitive, so allocate sufficient time to prepare the best application possible.
- Required documents – ensure you have attached copies of required documents to support your application (refer to the ‘Required Documents’ section below).
- Sign and date the application form by typing in your name and the date where indicated in the Certificate of Accuracy section at the bottom of the template.
- Carefully check your application before submitting it – refer to ‘Checklist’ at the bottom of this document.
- Return email – after your application has been submitted you will receive an acknowledgement email. This may take a few hours to be generated. If you do not receive this, and your application was submitted before the closing date and time, contact the 0800 customer service number below.
- Workshops – if you need advice to help develop a good application, your tertiary provider may know of workshops that you could attend. Alternatively, you can contact Kia Ora Hauora (Māori Health workforce development programme) as they run scholarship application workshops in a number of locations. Refer to the Kia Ora Hauora website for further details.

- You must attach a scanned copy of the form ‘Confirmation of study and tuition fees’ which has been signed by an authorised representative of your tertiary provider. It can be downloaded from the application template but can also be downloaded here: Download a Confirmation of study and tuition fees form (Word, 264 KB). Your application will not proceed without the confirmation of study and tuition fees form attached.
- Scanned copies of all your qualifications, awards and honours received (include any Māori, Health and/or Community related awards).
- For previous scholarship recipients: a scanned copy of your official transcript (of the most recent year you received a scholarship) from your tertiary provider must be attached to your application.
We receive hundreds of applications each year so try to avoid the following common errors as these can affect the rating your application receives.
- Compulsory documents are not attached (eg, Confirmation of Study and Tuition Fees).
- Insufficient information – try to answer all questions.
- Applicants do not sign the Certificate of Accuracy at the bottom of the template.
- Applicants who have received an HMS scholarship in the past have not attached an education transcript which shows the results of their most recent scholarship.
- Not proof-reading the application before it is submitted and not checking that the documents attached are the correct ones.
- Forgetting to actually submit the application before the closing date and time.
Once you have completed the first screen of the online form an email will be sent to your nominated email address containing your unique application code and a link to the rest of your application form. The option of saving and coming back to your application later is available. So that you can do this multiple times, do not delete the original ‘Application saved or submitted’ email.
Allocate sufficient time to complete your application
A good application takes time and effort so set aside sufficient time (at least 2 hours) with no distractions to complete the form. It may take you more or less time depending on how prepared you are and you may need to save and come back to it at a later time – refer to Application login section above.
Presentation of application
- Proof read your application before submitting it and check for spelling and grammatical errors.
- Check attachments to make sure they are the documents you intended attaching.
- Please read descriptions of the 11 categories available before starting your online application.
- Most importantly – your course of study must be health-related as the purpose of the scholarship programme is to achieve greater participation by Māori in the health and disability workforce.
- At its discretion, the Ministry may recategorise applications deemed to be incorrectly categorised. View the scholarship categories.
Selecting your referee
- You must provide the name and full contact details of your referee. They will need to be able to endorse your Korowai Māori section.
- This person must be of New Zealand Māori descent and cannot be your sibling, spouse, parent or child. Examples of people who would be acceptable are:
- Māori Trustee or committee member
- Māori Liaison Officer
- authorised member from a hapū/iwi
- Justice of the Peace or solicitor.
- Please ensure your referee is the appropriate person to provide the kind of information about you that the scholarship selection panel may need to know.
- Remember to let your referee know that you are including them in your application and check that they are happy to be contacted.
Before hitting the ‘submit’ button:
- ensure you have attached the following documents to support your application:
- confirmation of tuition fees form signed by an authorised representative of your tertiary provider (compulsory)
- copies of all your qualifications, awards and honours received (include any Māori, Health and/or Community related awards)
- for past recipients: ensure you have attached a copy of your official transcript from the previous year you received a scholarship
- ensure you have signed and dated the application where indicated (type in)
- proof read the application and perhaps ask someone else to review it for you, as ‘fresh eyes’ can be helpful.
Note that an acknowledgement email will be automatically generated after your application is submitted. However, this may take up to three hours, so check that you have received it. If in doubt, contact Ministry of Health customer service help desk – see below.
