Scholarship categories

A guide to the estimated number of Hauora Māori scholarships awarded per category.

There are 11 scholarship categories and three special award categories which are the Excellence Awards, John McLeod Award and Te Apa Māreikura Award. (Actual allocations vary each year.)

Scholarship applicants can select only one category once a year. (Note: At its discretion, the Ministry of Health may recategorise applications.)

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS $1,700.00 each 55
Māori students studying towards a Certificate or Diploma in Māori Health or Community Health, who have strong networks and academic performance that contributes to Māori health gains. This category does not include degree studies. 
DENTISTRY $4,200.00 each 10
Māori students studying towards a Bachelor of Dental Technology or Dental Surgery at a recognised New Zealand institution. Please note: Diplomas in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene fall within the Undergraduate category.
DIETITIANS $1,700.00 each 5
Māori students studying towards a Dietitian or Dietitian related Certificate, Diploma or Degree at a recognised New Zealand institution.
HEALTH MANAGEMENT $1,700.00 each 10
Māori students studying towards a Bachelor Degree in Management with a health related focus at a recognised New Zealand institution.
MEDICINE $4,200.00 each 100
Māori students studying towards a Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery or Medical Science qualification at a recognised New Zealand institution.
MIDWIFERY $1,700.00 each 25
Māori students studying towards a Midwifery Degree at a recognised New Zealand institution.
NURSING $1,700.00 each 155
Māori students studying towards a Nursing Degree at a recognised New Zealand institution.
PHARMACY $1,700.00 each 10
Māori students studying towards a Bachelor of Pharmacy at a recognised New Zealand institution.
PHYSIOTHERAPY $1,700.00 each 20
Māori students studying towards a Physiotherapy Degree at a recognised New Zealand Institution.
POSTGRADUATE $2,200.00 each 55
Māori students studying towards a health-related Post Graduate Certificate or Diploma, or a Masters’ or Doctoral Degree at a recognised New Zealand institution.
UNDERGRADUATE $1,700.00 each 75
Māori students studying towards a health-related Degree, which falls outside the other categories listed at a recognised New Zealand institution.
SPECIAL AWARDS NO. OF SCHOLARSHIPS awarded VALUE
The following categories are awarded at the discretion of the Ministry. Applicants do not apply directly.
EXCELLENCE AWARDS 11 $1,000.00 each
An additional award will be granted to the top-scoring candidate in each of the 11 categories.
JOHN McLEOD AWARD 2 $10,000.00 each
The John McLeod Award (for Medicine) is a prestigious award in memory of the late Dr John McLeod, renowned internationally for his work in public health and his significant contribution towards improving indigenous health status. Recipients of the award will possess a strong commitment to Māori health improvement, leadership qualities and an excellence in academia.
TE APA MĀREIKURA AWARD 2 $10,000.00 each
The Te Apa Māreikura Award was established to acknowledge four prominent Māori community leaders and their contribution to the improvement of Māori health. Recipients of the Award will demonstrate competencies in community health, have strong connections to and involvement with the community, have proven leadership ability in community health, effective community networks, and academic performance that contributes to future Māori health improvement.
