Security of radioactive sources

Unsecured radioactive sources have caused deaths and serious injuries in many parts of the world, and these have been well documented in a number of IAEA publications. It is important to avoid events involving radioactive sources that are beyond regulatory control and to prevent deliberate attempts to acquire radioactive sources for malevolent purposes.

The IAEA produces publications that provide practical guidance in assessing and implementing security measures commensurate with the risks associated with different radioactive sources in use, storage and transport.

IAEA Nuclear Security Series 11 is a useful reference for all people involved in use or storage of radioactive material and IAEA Nuclear Security Series 9 applies for all transport of radioactive material.
