Mental health and addiction workforce service forecast

Lead: Professor Rob Kydd

This report proposed a shift in focus towards primary and integrated care and preventive interventions, building on the Better, Sooner, More Convenient policy. It is one of a number of forecasts commissioned by Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) to build a picture of the future health and disability workforce.

Recommendations included:

  • improve access for those with unmet mental health needs, including the elderly and at-risk young people
  • develop skills in primary care teams.

This report sits alongside a number of other initiatives across the Ministry of Health and the mental health and addictions sector, as part of Rising to the Challenge, the mental health and addiction service development plan 2012–17.

Health Workforce New Zealand has also helped establish Credentialing for registered nurses who work with people with mental health and addiction needs.
