Diabetes workforce service forecast

Lead: Helen Snell

This report looked at how to respond to the rise in diabetes across all age groups. Appropriate expertise will be required for all types of diabetes and to meet complex demands of those with the condition. It is one of a number of forecasts commissioned by Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ) to build a picture of the future health and disability workforce.

Recommendations included:

  • more mobile health care services
  • care provided remotely via electronic communications, where appropriate
  • primary health services to identify and manage high risk individuals
  • specialist interdisciplinary teams to focus on patients with more complex needs.

Health Workforce New Zealand also helped run demonstrations of the new role of Pharmacist prescriber a with the aim to have 100 diabetes nurses trained and registered as prescribers.
