The Health Workforce Directorate supports regulation of the health workforce and associated legislation to combine workforce flexibility that will improve access to health services with safe practice and competence. Where appropriate, this includes expanding the range of tasks a health practitioner can undertake, such as prescribing.
The Health Workforce Directorate’s role includes administering and reviewing the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCA Act), considering applications for regulation from new professions and helping to remove legislative barriers that limit practitioners’ ability to work to the top of their scope of practice.
The Ministry is currently seeking feedback on draft Terms of Reference and core standards for performance reviews of responsible authorities. See the Health Consultation Hub to provide your feedback.
