Applying to volunteer with NZMAT

Clinicians and supporting staff working in health care settings in New Zealand are invited to register for the New Zealand Medical Assistance Team (NZMAT).

Read the NZMAT Operational Manual before registering, to be sure you understand the requirements and obligations of volunteering. You must also agree to the Code of Conduct.

How to register

You can register your interest using the NZMAT Registration of Interest Form (Word, 47 KB). You must use the form to register – it allows us to collect consistent information on volunteers in order to match their skills to the needs of affected areas.

Once you have completed the form, you can either scan it and email it to the NZMAT Programme Manager or post it to:

Information we need

All registrants will be expected to provide the following information:

  • their professional skills and capabilities
  • previous experience in health disaster relief or work in developing countries
  • physical fitness
  • availability for deployment
  • vaccinations
  • passport details
  • driver’s licence details
  • contact numbers, postal, and email addresses
  • referees
  • New Zealand practicing certificate numbers when these apply to the professional group concerned.

Updating your information

You can update or revise your registration at any time by emailing the NZMAT Programme Manager.

Confirming your registration

Applicants will be assessed by the NZMAT Reference Group against the selection requirements, based on:

  • information supplied
  • referee checks
  • possibly an interview.

You will receive confirmation by email as soon as your registration is completed.

A confirmed registration does not mean that you will automatically be selected for training or an NZMAT deployment. However, it does mean you are listed as a member of a pool of appropriately skilled and experienced people, available to respond to a range of health needs in New Zealand or the south-west Pacific.

Every six months you will receive a reminder notice to confirm your continued registration.

Volunteering in response to a specific event

Our volunteer database is used to manage volunteers for any event. Pre-registered staff who have been appropriately trained are the most likely to be deployed.

Registering before an event means that you can be considered for appropriate training, and that NZMAT can respond promptly in an emergency.

Protecting your information

Your information will be maintained within a central, secure database administered by the Ministry of Health and Counties Manukau DHB. Your information will only be used to engage you in activities related to NZMAT, including:

  • recruitment for participation in a disaster drill or exercise
  • to provide you with program information
  • to request your assistance.

Note that the Ministry of Health and Counties Manukau DHB select volunteers after liaising with the relevant professional organisations. This enables us to classify volunteers by their suitability for deployment within the south-west Pacific and/or New Zealand. The information you provide in the registration form will be shared with these organisations as part of the selection process.

Under no circumstances will this information be sold to or otherwise shared with any entity that is not a direct or indirect partner in the NZMAT programme.

The collection and use of your information is regulated by the Privacy Act 1998. For more information about the Privacy Act, see the Privacy Commissioner’s Guide to the Privacy Act 1993.

If you would like to request or have an enquiry about the information held about you, write to:
