In July 2020 the Ombudsman published a report into the Ministry’s collection and management of information about the deaths of people with intellectual disabilities living in community residential services. The report made a number of findings and made 10 recommendations on where the Ministry can make improvements. The full report and an Easy Read version are available on Ombudsman’s website.
The Ministry has developed an action plan which outlines the steps we will take to implement the recommendations made by the Ombudsman in his report.
Improvements made to the collection and recording of deaths
The Ministry has already made several improvements since the commencement of the Ombudsman’s investigation. This has included making procedures clearer, matching data about deaths across the Ministry and improving record keeping and data quality.
The Disability Directorate will make plans to implement the actions in this plan by April 2022.
