Māori candidates’ participation in a science subject

Year 11 candidates

In 2009, there were 11,585 year 11 Māori candidates studying within the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Of these, 8282 participated in a science subject, an increase of 2332 candidates from 2004 (table 1).

Between 2004 and 2009, the participation rate of year 11 Māori candidates in a science subject increased from 66.3% to 71.5%. During this time, the non-Māori rate remained higher at around 85%.

Year 12 candidates

In 2009, there were 8751 year 12 Māori candidates studying within the NQF. Of these, 2757 participated in a science subject, an increase of 886 candidates from 2004 (table 2).

Between 2004 and 2009, there was little change in the participation rates of year 12 Māori and non-Māori candidates in a science subject. The year 12 Māori participation rate remained around 32% and the non-Māori rate remained around 53%.

Year 13 candidates

In 2009, there were 5526 year 13 Māori candidates studying within the NQF. Of these, 1282 participated in a science subject, an increase of 455 candidates from 2004 (table 3).

Between 2004 and 2007, the participation rate of year 13 Māori candidates in a science subject decreased by 2.1% to 22.5%. In 2008 this rate increased to 23.2% where it stayed consistent through 2009. Non-Māori candidates’ participation rates reduced from 47.8% in 2004 to 39.8% in 2009, a decrease of 8%.
