Kidney transplantation with JJ stent insertion

Created Dec 2015
Reviewed Dec 2019

Should a procedure code for JJ stent insertion be assigned in addition to kidney transplant or is it a component of kidney transplantation procedure?

All kidney transplant patients have a stent inserted to ensure that urine from the new kidney to the bladder does not damage the anastomosis until healing has occurred, therefore JJ stent insertion is a component of the transplant.

Refer to ACS 0016 General procedure guidelines – procedure components.
