Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS)

Created Aug 2019

Patient with Moyamoya disease was admitted to have an Encephaloduroarteriosynangiosis (EDAS) performed. This is a procedure for revascularisation of an area of the brain by redirecting a scalp artery. EDAS involves a branch of the superficial temporal artery which is laid directly on the surface of the brain without doing a direct anastomosis. The expectation is that the artery will eventually grow new vessels into the brain and therefore provide more blood flow.

The ACHI Index entry for Revascularisation/intracranial/artery leads to 35414-00 [702] Embolectomy or thrombectomy of intracranial artery, which is incorrect for this procedure.
I have recommended the coder assign 90007-02 [28] Other procedures on brain or cerebral meninges in the meantime. Is there a better ACHI code?

After reviewing the procedure code options, there does not appear to be an appropriate code available for the EDAS procedure. Therefore, a coding query has been raised with the Independent Hospital Pricing Authority (IHPA) to confirm the appropriate code assignment. In the interim, assign code 90007-02 [28] Other procedures on brain or cerebral meninges and add free text to specify the procedure performed.
