Nau Mai Rā privacy policy

Important note: All travellers flying into New Zealand must complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration prior to check-in via the New Zealand Traveller Declaration website. Declarations made through the Nau Mai Rā website ― which is no longer available ― are no longer  accepted.

What is the purpose of Nau Mai Rā and Traveller Passes?

Nau Mai Rā is the electronic system approved to collect information from you so you can complete your Traveller Declaration. Once the Traveller Declaration is completed with the specified information provided, Nau Mai Rā will issue a Traveller Pass for you to meet the conditions of travel under the Order.

There may also be other conditions under the Order that you must meet prior to arrival in New Zealand, but they must be satisfied by you outside the Nau Mai Rā process (for example any vaccination or testing requirements to enter New Zealand).

Nau Mai Rā will securely collect the details from you and send them to a secure database managed by the Ministry of Health. Nau Mai Rā is operated by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (Immigration New Zealand) as agent for the Ministry of Health.

What will your information be used for?

For all Travellers, the information is collected to support the public health response to COVID-19.

We may need to check your arrival pathway is correct. We may pass information to Customs New Zealand by secure means, when you have not completed a Traveller Pass or so that they can confirm you are entitled to follow enter New Zealand with the Pacific QFT or No Isolation pathways you have represented apply to you. We may contact you before or after your arrival in New Zealand to check up on any requirements or restrictions that may apply to you. We may also need to find and contact you before or after you have arrived in New Zealand for contact tracing purposes (if you may have been exposed to COVID-19 or you may have exposed others) or if there is public health information we want to provide to you.

The information collected will also enable the Ministry of Health, and other relevant agencies to support and monitor your compliance with any public health requirements that apply to you after your arrival in New Zealand. For example, you may be required to complete Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) or other tests as required on specified dates after your arrival. We may send communications to the contact details you have provided to us so you can report back confirmation you have met any requirements, and to assist us if we need to monitor your compliance with any of these requirements.

Your information will also be used to support the Ministry of Health in reporting and statistical analysis (these reports will not contain identifiable information for any person).

Your declaration (as appropriate for your pathway) that during the 14 day period before you board the direct flight or first connecting flight to Zealand you:

  • meet the criteria for the arrival pathway you are claiming (either Pacific QFT or the No Isolation requirement)
  • are not waiting for test results from the last 14 days; and
  • are not subject to public health direction in another country for my COVID-19 related risk (for example, directed to isolate or be tested for COVID-19); and
  • have not prematurely ended a period of isolation or quarantine to travel to New Zealand; and
  • are fully vaccinated and will produce evidence of your vaccination status on arrival in New Zealand (or if permitted under the Order have a certificate from a health practitioner confirming you should not be vaccinated for medical reasons)
  • Will undergo any required testing for the eligible pathway

What if someone else fills this out for me?

You may authorise another person to complete the information on your behalf, but they must confirm that you have given your consent to do this.

What if I am under 16 years old?

If you are under 16 years old you may choose to enter your own information into Nau Mai Rā, but it must be accurate. Please ask your parent, guardian or caregiver for assistance if you have any questions. If it becomes necessary for a Contact Tracer to contact you, they may ask your parent or guardian to provide the information for you.

Will my information be secure?

Your personal information will be held and managed in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020 and Health Information Privacy Code 2020. Strong measures are in place to protect your information from unauthorised access. Access is limited to authorised users, and that access is recorded and audited.

Who will see my information?

The information is held for use by:

  • The Ministry of Health and other agencies with operational responsibility under the Air Border Order or the COVID-19 Public Health Response (Isolation and Quarantine) Order 2021 or other orders that impose requirements on Travellers. This could include confirming your arrival pathway, confirming your ongoing compliance with Order requirements prior to and after your arrival in New Zealand, or meeting other COVID-19 public health requirements.
  • Contact Tracers if they need to locate or contact you or provide information to you. If you test positive for COVID-19, or are a potential close or casual contact, information disclosed by you to a Contact Tracer may also be added to your records within the secure database used by the Contact Tracers. It will then be treated as part of your personal health record.

How long will my information be kept for?

The information will be retained for the duration of the pandemic and in accordance with the Public Records Act 2005.
