Every year between November and February, we welcome interns for our summer intern programme.

Our interns carry out meaningful and engaging work across our business groups. These are fixed term positions that pay the living wage, and include an interesting development programme. The business groups have a supportive environment, and facilitate regular catch ups with other members of the programme.

We also partner with tertiary education providers throughout the year to provide work experience opportunities that support students to progress their qualifications.

Summer internship programme

Our summer internship programme has been running since 2021, welcoming a talented and diverse group of interns each year to work on important projects. Read the stories about Dev, Victoria and Beatrice, three interns from our latest programme.

Summer intern Dev

Dev joined us through the Analytics and Research in Government (ARG) Programme. He worked on investigating the repair of hernias using mesh and non-mesh techniques which will inform both policy and the discussion around the use of mesh devices in healthcare.

Summer intern programme - Victoria

Victoria joined us through the Tupu Toa Programme. She assisted with processing notifications that health and disability service providers submit to the HealthCert Team under the Health and Disability Services (Safety) Act 2021.

Summer intern programme - Beatrice

Beatrice joined us through the Tupu Tai Programme. She and worked on Māori recruitment and retainment data, to highlight initiatives that will ensure that the Ministry of Health is reflective of the communities it serves.

Applications open in August each year

During August, we advertise intern roles on our careers site. We partner with the following intern placement organisations to engage a group of talented individuals that reflect the communities we serve.

  • Tupu Toa provides opportunities for Māori and Pacific tertiary students in corporate, government and community organisations.
  • Tupu Tai offers opportunities for Pasifika tertiary students and recent graduates interested in a public sector career.
  • Be.Lab offers internship opportunities for New Zealanders living with disabilities or access needs.

Partnering with tertiary education providers

During the year we also partner with tertiary education providers on a variety of programmes to provide work experience opportunities that support students to progress their qualifications.

We engage directly with these education providers:

  • Victoria University of Wellington on the Bachelor of Health, Master of Philosophy, Politics and Economic and Master of Data Science and Applied Statistics programmes.
  • Otago University on the Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Medicine and Pacific Opportunity Programmes.
